Fred Smith, the bassist who helped define the sound of the New York rock band Television, has died at the age of 77.
News of Smith’s death was shared this week by people close to the band, marking the loss of a key figure from the late 1970s downtown music scene. Smith was part of Television’s original lineup and played bass on the group’s 1977 debut album Marquee Moon, a record that later became widely regarded as one of the most influential releases of its era.
Amid that praise, while the album is often celebrated for its intertwined guitar work, Smith’s bass lines quietly anchored the songs, giving structure and momentum to the band’s extended compositions. Television emerged from the CBGB scene alongside acts that would later shape punk and post-punk, but their sound leaned more toward precision and tension than speed or volume.
After the band’s initial breakup, Smith stepped away from music and largely stayed out of public view. No cause of death has been announced. His contribution remains closely tied to a single album that continues to resonate decades later.
