I Am Thankful For… Day 3

Sankey_Navy

I am thankful for the “Inter-Vet.”  That’s right, the “Inter-Vet.”

While the “Inter-Net” may be distracting, it is not without incredible information. Without genealogy websites like Ancestry and the free US GenWeb Project, I would have never known my 6th great grandfather, James Girdler had a Revolutionary War marker in Somerset Ky. Nor would I have been accepted into Daughters of the American Revolution, as PVT James Girdler is my connection.

I would have never felt the thrill of showing my husband his father’s name as a 21 year old on the Navy Muster Roll in WW11 aboard the USS Pyro.  Nor would we have spent a Saturday afternoon, searching for the grave stone of his Revolutionary War 5th Great-Grandfather,  Samuel Smith in Latta, South Carolina.  We never found it, so perhaps his war pension bought him a private piece of land to call his own.

It is because of the “Inter-Vet” that we have been able to read stories and learn about the brave men and women that came before us and their struggle to keep us free.

God Bless the Veterans, then and now.
