Tri-State Happenings from the first week of March 1975

Mar 02, 2013 -- 2:42pm

Casey Kasem counts down the biggest hits from this week in 1975 Sunday morning from 7 to 10 on 103.5 WGRR on American Top 40 The 70s...

Here are some Tri-State headlines from this very week in '75...

Rod Stewart was in town with Faces playing at Cincinnati Gardens (opening acts...REO Speedwagon & Blue Oyster Cult).  Tickets were $5.50.  We were buying them at Ticketron outlets including Shillitos stores.  Rod's encore that night was "Maggie May."

Over 500 were in attendance at the Hall of Mirrors at the Netherland Hilton hotel downtown for the wedding of Reds catcher Johnny Bench and Vickie Chesser.  The couple drove from Christ Church to the reception in a 1950s Rolls Royce.  The most unusual wedding gift was a huge sculpture of the MGM Grand in Las Vegas (the location of their first date).  Johnny and Vickie honeymooned in Florida while the Reds were in spring training.

The TV show SWAT premiered on ABC.  We were watching the show Monday nights at 9 on Channel 12.

The 15th Cavalcade of Customs show was in town at Convention Center downtown.  On display, the Batmobile.  Burt Ward who played Robin on the TV show Batman was also making an appearance at the show.

Headline in the sports section of the Cincinnati Post & Times Star read..."Sparky Anderson isn't predicting a championship this year but he's thinking about one."  Of course, the Reds would go on to become World Series champions that year (and in 1976!).  GRReat time to be a Reds fan!

Singer/songwriter Randy Newman was playing at Regents Hall at Northern Kentucky State College in Highland Heights (now known as Northern Kentucky University).  Tickets $6.

The Pure Praire League were playing at U.C.'s Emory Auditorium this week in 1975.  Tickets $3.50.  Listen for their hit song "Amie" Sunday morning during the AT40 countdown...and keep listening to 103.5 WGRR to win 2 tickets to see the Pure Prairie League Friday night at the Newport Syndicate (dinner included before the show) on this WGRR Ohio Originals Winners Weekend!  Good luck at winning and thanks for listening.  Have a GRReat weekend!

My Valentine's Story

Feb 13, 2013 -- 4:07pm

It was because of an out of the ordinary event on Valentine's Day 1995 that I met my wife Sahara.  My boss at the time was always looking for ways to spread the word about WGRR and he decided to hold a "Have a date with Rockin' Ron" contest (because all the other DJs were either married or dating).  I begged and pleaded with him to come up with some other idea for promotion for the radio station but he wouldn't give in.  That night, our evening DJ took calls from listeners interested in a date with me.  He called me at home with his suggestions on who I should go out with.  I finally chose a woman from Montgomery named Robin (after all, it seemed fitting that Rockin' Ron should have a date with Rockin' Robin!).  The next day during my radio show, Sahara called me on the request line and asked if I had found someone.  I told her I had a date with Rockin' Robin.  She told me she tried to get through on the phone but the line was always busy.  We talked a bit and a few days later she won a prize and came to the radio station to pick it up.  I met her and we began dating.

Even though I had begun a relationship with Sahara, I kept my promise and went on a date with Rockin' Robin.  A limo picked us up and we enjoyed dinner together.  We had a wonderful time but my true Valentine was Sahara.  This fall we'll celebrate our 17th wedding anniversary.

I hope you and your sweetheart have a GRReat Valentine's Day!
