We know that Don McLean's "American Pie" was inpired by the events that occurred on February 3, 1959 when 3 music icons went down in a plane crash in Clear Lake, Iowa...but what do all the words mean? Here's a website that tells you, verse by verse: understandingamericanpie.com/index.htm
In high school, I remember one of my teachers giving us the assignment of figuring out the references in this 8 and a half minute long song...and keep in mind this was before we had internet access. Looking at the meaning of it all on the screen before me, I wondered how this teacher expected 17 year old kids in the 80's to know about a Dinah Shore ad for Chevy in the 50s (as just one example)!!

Remember when MTV first played Michael Jackson's "Thriller" video? I was determined to learn that dance that ghoulish MIchael does with the other corpses. My favorite part is when one turns his head and something flies off of his face. Ewww! But, I'm getting off the point here. The dance is so fun and has been done by many...in jail yards and even in reception halls. Check out this terrific, thrilling wedding surprise. Man, these guys are GOOD! http://youtu.be/YT6InvLJUzA

One of my friends on Facebook said two of the hardest things in life is (1) waiting and (2) folding a fitted sheet....which got me to thinking about my own horrible folding techniques. Fortunately, you can find just about ANYTHING on youtube and sure enough, when I did a search for it, I found a whole page full of instructional videos. This one is my favorite (so far...I only watched the first 5). I love how she says that folding fitted sheets is "one of the biggest challenges you're gonna face in your life" and yet she tackles it easily in less than a minute.

Ten years ago, I was working as part of a radio morning show. Bill, our news director, wrote up newscasts and he and I switched off reading the stories twice an hour. That Tuesday, our 8:30am newscast was typical...a few local stories, a couple of national stories, and an entertainment nugget.
Our final daily newscast at 9am was usually more light-hearted. We'd look for outrageous or funny stories to add in. As Bill feverishly typed away at the computer, we could see the initial TV images of a plane having hit the World Trade Center. No one yet knew what kind of plane...or if it was an accident. At 9:00am, we opened the newscast with what little we knew so far about the event. As we were on air with it, we saw the 2nd plane hit. From there, I remember a blur of chaos and confusion. Everything changed. Our normally jovial morning show took a sudden somber mood..and instead of going back to normal programming after the show, the morning show guys stayed on a while to continue coverage. Meanwhile, everyone in the larger newsroom (for our sister station) was running amuck, trying to get details straight. A reporter running to another room for another computer asking "Where is Shanksville, PA?" Listeners calling..."Are we safe downtown?"... "Should we pull our kids out of school?"...questions we really can't answer.
I went home that afternoon, turned on CNN, put a tape in my VCR and hit 'record.' I let it roll for 8 hours. I've only watched part of it once since that day, but it sure captured a moment in time...when people were stil so confused about the details. I still have those 2 morning newscasts from my station...the 'normal' one at 8:30am and the beginning of the horror at 9:00am. And I'll never forget the look on Bill's face when we learned about the attack on the Pentagon...horrified, looking at me with wide eyes, mouthing the words "What is going on?"
Sunday, September 11, 2011, Chris & Janeen are doing a special commemorative show from 8a-10am. Please join us as we reflect on that day and they way it changed us over the past 10 years.

With Bengals regular season nearly upon us, it's time for me to prepare the home for proper Who Dey game viewing. My family tradition centers around "the Bengal light." My dad found this light at a Goodwill store, I believe. There is a small night light bulb in the base that seems to only illuminate the mid-section of this sassy cat. Dad used to turn on the light at the beginnning of the game and leave it on as long as the Bengals had hope of winning. The art of the tradition was to determine: at what point during a losing game do you give up any hope of a win? Of course, we love when the light stays on! Now, even if I GO to the game, I still position the light in front of the tv so it can "see" the game. I've taken him to bars and friends' homes. And I've begun the tradition of replacing the bulb with a fresh one at the start of each season. New hope, ya know. Let's hope I get to waste just a little electricity this year, eh?

Well, in honor of our "Summer of 76" Winners Weekend, as we give away tickets to see Peter Frampton come alive at the PNC Pavillion on August 28th, I wanted to share the trailer of one of my favorite guilty pleasures... a movie starring a young Peter Frampton (swoon) and the Bee Gees, George Burns, Steve Martin, Aerosmith, Alice Cooper, Earth Wind & Fire & Billy Preston (just to name a few). This movie was from 1978 and I saw it probably 50 times at the drive-in. And yes, I now own it on DVD. Click this and enjoy... youtu.be/PQf5Q9NQvhA

Found a neat site that lists all the bands, in order, and all tunes they played. Also, note the bottom where they list bands that cancelled or just declined the invite to play...and their reasons why!
