This is Resolution Week.  52% of Americans make them, 12% keep them.  Why not just try to do the best you can?  Aiming for perfection leads to failure, further leading to inaction.  I have two books that I think can really help you.  I have read lots of diet and exercise/self help books and these two are my favorites.

The first is an older book "Younger Next Year,"  written by a doctor and a lawyer.  The theme is how to get functionally younger as we get older by putting off normal problems of aging like weakness, sore joints and balance problems. There's one for women too in a pink jacket!  There is also lots of interesting information.  For example, did you know that sitting in front of the television mimics depression in the human body?  From a cave man perspective, that is what they used to do to survive the winter months and predators, lots of sitting and lots of quiet.  Silence and staring at a tv for long periods of time creates depression-like symptoms.  Makes sense doesn't it?

The second book is Jorge Cruise-The Belly Fat Cure.  I have tried lots of different diets and programs, but none has worked like this one.  It isn't even a diet, it is a change in the way you eat.  Quite simply, you will learn how the sugar in the American diet and excessive carbohydrates create fat around the middle, the most dangerous fat of all.  I find that when i go back to this after slacking off, I lose immediately.  Keep track of your sugar and carb intake and that's all there is to it.  It's not like Atkins or South Beach, as you are allotted 120 carbs a day.  Jorge's system makes it so easy to keep track of, so you're not counting all day.  After a week you will have it down pat.  Jorge was formally quite overweight and lost it with the help of Dr.  Oz.

Run to the library before someone else checks these out!  Better still get your own copy because you will want to read and refer to them over and over again.

Happy New You!

I love this time of year when co-workers bake.  You may know I recently baked my first home made cake and boy was it alot of work.  So I can really appreciate when someone brings in lots of goodies they have prepared.  I've done Christmas cookies and it is my version of Hades.  Our own Angie brought in a scrumptious array of sweets yesterday, made in her own "Martha," kitchen.  Cookies, chocolate covered pretzels, and other beauties.  But the one that stood out the most was the No-Bake Peanut Butter bars.  In the tradition of the buckeye ball, but not nearly the work, but oh so good!  I may even make them.  So if you are looking for something simple to whip up in the next day or two, try these.  Because of her culinary prowess, I have officially abdicated my "Martha" Crown to the one and only Queen of the Kitchen...Angie Irick.

I was out Saturday and missed the big brawl at the Crosstown Shootout.  But I have seen it replayed many times on all the national newscasts.  Here is my take.  It is real easy for those of us sitting in the stands and on the couch to judge two teams going at it.  What we value in young men and their basketball skills "to get after it," is what we expect them to turn off on a dime.  We value aggression and warrior skils.  While modern society has changed, the human male has not. When you have young testosterone-filled men bumping each other, elbowing and trash talking, someone is going down. Add the noise, the crowd, the mob mentality and you have a recipe for disaster.  I chuckle when the adults on tv give their opinions as to what should and should not have happened.  Have they never been young?  Have they never been to a rec game, where boys taunt each other.  Have they never been on a playground and seen how kids treat one another?  Male testosterone levels peak in the late teens and remain high until the mid-20s: precisely the time in which male aggressiveness and violence is most common.  I am not saying what happened is right, but it is also not unexpected or uncommon.  The world of Twitter has made it so much worse.  It's like throwing gasoline on a fire all week long.  Someone will get burned.  it is up to the adults in the room, just like on that school playground to manage the "children."  if players from the other side are constantly in front of the other team's bench taunting the coaches and players, the solution is real easy. The officials should call  technical fouls so there are consequences early on.  When you send a kid to the principal's office, they quickly get the message that taunting will not be tolerated.  It is the same on the basketball court.

Chris O'Brien and Janeen Coyle
103.5 WGRR Cincinnati
Weekdays 5-9am

The WGRR morning team of Chris O’Brien and Janeen Coyle have been married for 26 years, and have worked together in some capacity for longer than that!

Chris & Janeen met while both worked at the same Cincinnati radio station in 1979.

Chris began in radio while a teen in his native South Carolina (Go Gamecocks!), working in the south before being offered a job in Cleveland while in ChattanoogaTennessee.  Chris moved from Cleveland to Cincinnati in 1974.  Except for doing afternoons at WMET 1977-78, Chris was with WKRQ for nearly 13 years.  He was named Best Radio Voice by Cincinnati Magazine and aBillboard Personality of the year nominee. Chris joined WGRR in 1991.  (Little known fact:  Chris was the first announcer for the Jerry Springer Show when it began – yikes!)  Chris is also an honorary Kentucky Colonel, son!

Janeen joined WKRQ in 1979 while attending the University of Cincinnati’s College Conservatory Of Music.  She began with overnights, worked middays, and later moved to afternoon drive where she remained until 1988.  From there Janeen did talk radio, hosting the very popular Chick Talk show.  Janeen co-hosted morning drive with on WKRC until she was contacted about joining Chris in 1995 and forming the unique husband & wife team.  The two even did a daily live morning “watercooler” segment, simulcast on WCPO-TV for several years.

Chris & Janeen are very involved in the community, appearing at fundraising events and supporting the Arthritis Foundation, SPCA, Diabetes Association, Breast Cancer Awareness (Chris's mom is a survivor), Ronald McDonald House Charities, Cincinnati Association for the Blind, and Kindervelt, among others in the tri-state area.

Their son, Dylan, a recent graduate of the University of Cincinnati's College Conservatory of Music, is with FOX19.  They have the rambunctious "Tank The Pug," too!
